What The Science Of Language Pathology Is, And How To Make A Career Of It

Language pathology is the science and study of medical disorders which affect a person's speech and language. It is usually known as SLP or Speech Language Pathology. Practice of this science encompasses methods of diagnosis and treatment which vary greatly in character, as there are so many possible causes of speech problems. Even within the overall science of speech pathology, there are many sub disciplines, and many practitioners only work with certain types of people, such as children or the elderly. This is useful, as each group of people has special characteristics which make certain types of problem far more prevalent than in other groups.

Some cases are caused by mental factors, and these will not respond to standard physiotherapy unless the underlying causes can be identified and tackled first. Other cases are purely physical in nature, and a consistent program of treatment can see improvement over time. It is important for the practitioner to formulate a program which can be followed by the patient at home in their own time. Even though it will be necessary to keep the patient coming in for further appointments, the more that can be achieved in between these appointments, the better for everyone.

One of the most common causes of this type of physical problem is that it is the result of a previous serious illness. Any illness which affects the brain can obviously create problems with speech, and in these cases it it often difficult to predict exactly how much progress can be made in bringing the patient back to health. Cancer is another major cause of speech problems, and in this case it usually more possible for the patient to regain full use of their speech over time. There is often no effect on the brain, which is the most important organ in formulating and executing speech.

Audiology and speech language pathology are obviously linked, and can be studied as a single unit at university and practised as a unified career. The audiologist is someone who analyzes and treats hearing and balance disorders, balance also being a function of the ear mechanism. Audiology is lagging behind speech pathology in terms of regulation, with the states themselves still responsible for administering the practice. It is expected that the situation will soon change, and that new audiologists will all have to qualify for the Doctor of Audiology degree no matter which state they live in, or which state they completed their studies in.

Speech pathologists are likely to become even more in demand in the following decade than they are now. The situation at the moment is that there are only a hundred thousand practising pathologists in the United States, and there is more demand for their time than they are able to manage. As the situation worsens, it is certain that people entering the profession can look forward to a high degree of job security, and a good level of remuneration. Although these are not reasons alone for choosing the career, they certainly do no harm. It is, however, a career which should only be followed by people with a genuine interest in helping others overcome debilitating problems. There is a lot of satisfaction to be gained from the practice of language pathology.
