The Role Of A Speech Pathology Assistant, And How To Become One
A speech pathology assistant is a helper employed by a registered pathologist in carrying out diagnostic, and, in some cases, remedial work. Speech language pathology assistant jobs are considerably easier to obtain than the career of pathologist itself, as there is always someone there to supervise and provide the knowledge which the untrained assistant will not have. A speech pathologist is one of the most highly trained medical practitioners in the whole of medicine. Few lay people really understand or appreciate the huge amount of study and hard work which goes into achieving the title of pathologist.
It is a terrific career if you can manage to break into it, but that is much more easily said than done. It takes two years of hard study before you can even hope to break into practical work. Once you have achieved this, you will then have another year where you will be under supervision in real live situations. This is the year which decides the future direction of your career. Because of the wide variety of conditions you will be treating as a pathologist, the career is very demanding and rewarding at the same time. It is a financially secure career as well, as there is a great shortage of qualified personnel, and that shortage is likely to worsen in the coming decade.
If you are looking to work in this field, but do not have the time or money needed to go through the huge learning process, training as an assistant is one possible answer. There are still approval processes you will need to go through, and these are regulated and administered through the American Speech Language Hearing Association. Although the qualifying standard is nowhere near as tough as it would be if you were trying to get into practice yourself, you are still going to be carrying out responsible tasks which need you to be able to respond to orders without having to think for too long.
As a speech language pathologist assistant, you will need to be able to keep a high degree of concentration, and be able to respond at a moment's notice to the needs of the practitioner. Ever greater numbers of pathologists are employing a speech language pathology assistant, although the numbers are still small as a percentage of the whole. These assistants are proving extremely useful, provided they are used in the way intended.
The danger inherent in employing assistants is that a tired practitioner, weighed down heavily with a huge workload, can be tempted to farm out tasks which they, as the qualified professional, need to be undertaking themselves. This is why the Association imposes very strict limits on the number of assistants any one practitioner may employ, and also the hours which they may work. Speech language pathology assistants are used because it provides the practitioner with more time to provide a direct service to the client. Many clients are suffering mentally, with the symptoms showing up as speech impediments. Practitioners are finding that they can offer a much more personal and direct service when they employ a speech pathology assistant.
