How Speech Pathology And Audiology Are Making A Difference In Peoples' Lives
Speech pathology and audiology are sciences which seek to assist and cure people who are suffering with disabilities relating to speech and hearing. There are practitioners in these sciences who can help people cope with these disabilities, and in many cases lessen or even cure them. It is not well known or understood that one in ten people have some kind of communication disorder. There is much which can be done to make life better for these people, and the demand for qualified practitioners is going to steadily increase in the coming years. Although it is very hard to break into these careers, the rewards certainly make the effort worthwhile.
Audiology and speech pathology careers demand a lot of time and effort for study. Until recently, it was up to the individual states to decide what standards needed to be met before someone could practice pathology. Now, the Federal Government has taken over and set the standard, and it is an extremely tough one. Two years of post graduate work is needed to allow a potential practitioner to get into practical work. After these two years comes the most important year of all, the one where you are assigned to a specialist and told to study and practice under them.
This year is the one which will usually make or break your chances of qualifying as a pathologist. You will be under pressure situations in having to deal with real people with real problems, yet you will also be under the watchful eye of someone who is there to spot every mistake you make. Don't feel that the supervisor is an enemy, however, or does not want you to succeed. Nothing could be further from the truth. As anyone who has ever gone through this situation knows, the specialist is actually desperate for you to succeed.
There is a gross shortage of people qualified to carry out pathology and audiology, so the educational system desperately wants you to succeed. In the coming decade, the number of jobs available is likely to increase dramatically, and there is likely to be a significant shortfall. Now is a good time to begin studying for this career, if you think you are up to the huge study periods involved. You will have the satisfaction that you are helping real people overcome what to them is a terrible blight on their life.
Speech pathology can have many different causes, and that is why diagnosis of the problem is critically important. Many cases of speech defects originate in the mind, and no amount of physical therapy will work to ease them. These cases need long and dedicated treatment over many months, but it is possible in most cases for a considerable improvement to be achieved. Cancer and other diseases can leave a legacy of speech or hearing problems, and it depends very much on the individual case whether or not any real progress can occur. Physical rehabilitation exercises which can be performed at home are critical here, and the exact nature of the exercises will depend on the type of problem encountered. There is no shortage of varied work days when you work in speech pathology or audiology.
