How To Break Into The Rewarding Career Of Speech Pathology Private Practice

Speech pathology private practice is an incredibly rewarding career, but one which is incredibly difficult to break into. The demands made of a student are extreme, and the need to devote years of your life to study before you can enter the career and begin earning will be prohibitive to so many. There are only a hundred thousand or so pathologists in the United States, and that is not enough to keep up with demand for their services. It is likely that the problem will get worse before it gets better. That is, of course, good news to a degree for anyone thinking of joining the profession, as it means almost guaranteed job security.

The path into this demanding career is set in stone by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA), although licensing and administration remain in the hands of the individual states. As well as job security, there is a pay rate well above average waiting for anyone who can last the course and qualify as a speech pathologist. The pay rate is likely to rise at a faster rate than inflation in the coming decade, as the shortage of qualified personnel worsens. Although money is not reason enough by itself to choose a career in a caring profession, it can do no harm to know that you and your family are likely to be provided for for many years to come.

It is inconceivable that the demand for this service will be met in the coming decade, as there is simply not enough time or resources to make sure that the numbers reach the required level. If you can qualify, your services will always be in demand, and you will always have plenty of work. You will be treating many different types of people, all with differing ailments, so your work day will never lack for variety. You will also be working in an environment designed to reduce stress and instil a sense of peace and calm. Anything which induces stress can have a detrimental effect on the condition being treated, so it is important to carry out treatment in a calm atmosphere.

If you are genuinely interested in people, a career as a speech pathologist could suit you well. You will meet many different types of vulnerable people in the course of your practice, and you will develop an understanding of how human frailty can affect people. You should also get to experience some sincere thanks from people who you have been able to help, and, thanks to modern technology, there should be plenty of those.

Some patients who come to you will have problems which are ingrained deep into their minds, and these will need a long period of treatment, allied to some true understanding. Others will have a purely physical defect, which may have come from a previous illness. To treat these, you will need an individualized plan of physiotherapy. The rewards will come when you see a person making genuine improvement after your treatment. Reward and satisfaction are things you will experience on a daily basis if you start a speech pathology private practice.
